Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, a Federal Government Agency mandated to enhance the Rule of Law through the provision of free legal assistance to the indigent in Nigeria has moved to her brand new Corporate Headquarters located at 22, Port Harcourt Crescent, off Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

The quest for a permanent corporate headquarters started long ago as most of the allocated offices occupied by the Council were bedeviled by shortage of space, limited access by clients and many inconveniences which was a bane in the performance of the noble mandate of the Council.

The first Corporate Headquarters of the Council was a one room office on the 4th floor of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Marina, Lagos.

The second place where the Council operated from was at Constanza House, 72 Campbell Street, Lagos and then to No. 10 Okotie Eboh Street, South West Ikoyi, Lagos State.

With the movement of the seat of the Federal Capital to Abuja, the Corporate Headquarters of the Council moved first to No. 22 Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II, and then later  to Federal Secretariat Complex, Ground Floor, Phase I, where the FCT Unit still occupies.

In the continuous search for safe haven, the then Director General, Mrs. Lateacia Akinlami, once again moved the Corporate Headquarters to No. 22, Oro Ago Crescent, Garki II in 2009 but the cost of paying rent proved detrimental to the Council.

This led to yet another movement to Federal Secretariat Complex, Block C, Phase II under the watch of the present Director General, Mrs. Joy S. Bob-Manuel.

Mrs. Bob-Manuel set in motion the drive to achieve the long lasting dream of the Council which is procuring a permanent Corporate Headquarters that would house all the Departments under one roof to create a unified working environment which led to the purchase of a building at Plot 22, Port Harcourt Crescent, Area II, Abuja.

The Building is a four-storey, open floor-plan design with a fully detached boys quarters and underground car park. It is located at the heart of the city in an easily located section of Garki amidst other government offices and financial institutions.

The Legal Aid Council celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year and it is a happy coincidence that it has finally moved to this befitting edifice which it can call its own.
