PRESS, PUBLIC RELATIONS & FREEDOM OF INFORMATION UNIT

The Press, Public Relations and Freedom of Information Unit handles the public relations and publicity functions for the Council.

Functions include:

1. Coordination of media coverage of the Council’s activities;

2. Procurement and distribution of Nigeria’s Coat of Arms, Portraits and other corporate souvenirs for dignitaries during courtesy calls by the Director-General;

3. Production of messages, construction and maintenance of billboards on behalf of the Council for the communication of relevant messages to boost special government policies and programmes;

4. Arranges advocacy for the Council to the general public which is done through press kits, campaigns and events.

5. Liaises between the Council, media and the public, designs and develops critical communication channels as the brand manager of the Council.

6. Increases public awareness about the Council through media coverage, press conferences, public hearing, retreats, interviews, etc;

7. Drafts media releases, interview techniques and provides advice on protocol for visits to the Council by media representatives;

8. Provides advice on media and public relations issues;

9. Issues Press Releases;

10. Develops and maintains a media contact list and ensures a cordial relationship between the Council and the media;

11. Keeps staff abreast of activities of interest to the Council;

12. Manages, regulates and implements the Freedom of Information Act as requested by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice; and

The Unit hosts the Council’s Desk for Freedom of Information. The Unit is saddled with the responsibility of providing information to the public upon application for same regarding the Council and its activities. Interested members of the public have access to records and information regarding the day to day activities of the Council. Final records, conclusive data, decisions, determinations which are of value to any individual are available upon request.

In line with section 2 of the FOI Act 2011, the Council is ensuring that proper records and information about all activities and operations of the Council are kept.

Members of the public are however to note the exemptions provided in sections 11 – 17 of the FOI Act 2011.
