The Correctional Centre Decongestion Department was created in the year 2011 as a Unit and upgraded to a Department in 2019. It is an important Department in the Council and the objective of the creation of the Department is to tackle and coordinate Correctional Centre decongestion exercises carried out by the Council.

Functions include:

1. Enrolment of private legal practitioners and NGOs in the pro-bono directory of the Council;

2. Assignment of cases to private legal practitioners and NGOs registered with the Council;

3. Liaises with Nigerian Correctional Services to conduct audit number of Awaiting Trial Inmates;

4. Confirmation of a minimum of three (3) completed pro bono cases by legal practitioners who apply for the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria;

5. Issuance of Certificate of Completion of cases to legal practitioners registered with the Council upon diligent conduct and completion of pro bono cases; and

6. Conducts enlightenment on activities of the Unit.
